It was lost near Pine Island 3NM2 on North Muldrew Lake (close to the Middle Church portage between North and Middle Lake).

    Gravenhurst Opera House Summer Brochure.pdf

    Dear Lake Dwellers!

It seems as though spring may have forgotten its roadmap but I’m sure we’ll be complaining about the hot weather in due time.  In the meantime, we are very excited to welcome you back to cottage and boating season on our beautiful Muskoka waterways.

The Gravenhurst Opera House has another terrific summer season planned and we couldn’t wait to tell you all about it!

The Gravenhurst Opera House has been a cultural cornerstone since 1901 and with that tradition in mind, we are happy that it continues to be a focal point for great entertainment all year long.

Summer Theatre in Canada started right here 85 years ago and we are very proud to continue the cherished tradition of professional summer theatre in our beautiful, historic venue.

Our 2019 Summer Theatre season will make you laugh, cry and dance in the aisles.  Opening with Harvest (June 26 to July 19), the story of a rental deal that goes ‘to pot’ or ‘up in smoke’. Well, you get the idea.  This very timely and very funny play by Canadian playwright Ken Cameron is a brilliantly written two hander, based on his parents’ real life experience.

This season’s musical takes us back to the days of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis!  This famous duo was loved around the world but their partnership didn’t last.  Dean & Jerry: What Might Have Been (July 24 to August 16) by Jesse Collins, delivers a very funny concert of old standards and old jokes.  Accompanied by a full band, stars of the show; Derek Marshall and Nicolas Arnold will transport you back to the clubs of Vegas.

The final theatre production of the summer is Kalamazoo (September 11 to 27).  This lovely story by Michelle Kholos Brooks and Kelly Younger finds Peg and Irving both alone in their later years.  Encouraged by family, they turn to on-line dating.  What could possibly go wrong?  More importantly, what could go right?  With second chances filled with humourous moments, this romantic comedy delivers a new lease on life for this unlikely couple.

**Don’t forget about our Show Us You’re Local Program.  If you pay taxes in the Town of Gravenhurst, bring us proof of residency and you’ll receive our Local 2 for 1 rate for our summer theatre performances.  That’s $20 per ticket on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays all summer long!  (tickets must be purchased in pairs). We also have group and package rates.  Just check in with our Box Office and they’ll be happy to tell you all about the great ways to save.

Our summer concerts are also a must see!  On Saturday, June 8th we have one of Toronto’s favourite bands, The Jive Bombers who will have you jumpin’ and jivin’ in the aisles.  They’re also bringing special guest Johnny Max with them who we all know and love!  On Saturday, August 17thJack Hutton & Friends will be back with what they’re calling their ‘Farewell Tour’.  Jack and friends are world renowned ragtime and jazz players which always makes for a fun night.  Grammy nominated producer and musician, Lance Anderson will be back this year with another incredible line up that will take us back 50 years to Woodstock, the festival of festivals!  On Saturday, August 24thWoodstock at 50 will feature many highlights from that unforgettable weekend.  This year’s Summer Season Wrap Up concert on Saturday, September 28th features North America’s Premier tribute to ‘Tapestry, The Carole King Songbook’ starring Suzanne O Davis.

We’ve attached our summer season brochure and an ad for you to share with your members, include in your newsletters or on your social media channels to help spread the word about our Show Us You’re Local program and how you can sign up for our e-newsletters.

Our Box Office is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm and 10:00 am until show time on performance days.  You can purchase tickets in person or by phone at 705-687-5550 or toll free at 1-888-495-8888.  The Box Office email address is operahouseboxoffice@gravenhurst.ca .  For a full listing of what is happening at the Opera House, please visit our website at www.GravenhurstOperaHouse.com

The Gravenhurst Opera House is Muskoka’s oldest entertainment tradition and the place to be all summer long!  Be sure to mark your calendars for all these great show!

We look forward to welcoming you back or for the very first time and hope that your time with us is treasured!

With all the reports surfacing around the flooding happening in the area, we wanted to share some communications.

The ice on Muldrew has finally thawed and thankful we are experiencing relatively seasonal water levels for those who haven't had the chance to be there themselves.

Below is the statement issued from the Town of Gravenhust this afternoon that will be of interest.

GRAVENHURST CONTINUES TO MONITOR - SPRING FRESHET

    Enhanced monitoring in effect.

Gravenhurst, ON – As Muskoka communities around Gravenhurst have declared flooding related emergencies, officials in the Town of Gravenhurst have increased monitoring of local waterways, just as they have been for the past six weeks.

“The Town’s Infrastructure Services staff instituted enhanced monitoring in mid-March in anticipation of the spring freshet, and a staff team has been watching the data points daily,” said Deputy Fire Chief Todd Clapp who is also the Community Emergency Management Coordinator. Isolated pockets of flooding have occurred throughout Gravenhurst. “We also began public messaging in early March prior to the start of the freshet, because we wanted those who have traditionally been affected to have it top of mind.”

“The river systems in North Muskoka are very different from those in our community, and we know from past years that our experience is dissimilar to theirs, but having said that, we’ve been extremely vigilant about the safety of our community,” said Mayor Paul Kelly. “The extreme water flows that warranted declarations of emergencies to the north of us have had an effect on Lake Muskoka and we are being very watchful of changing conditions,” he added.

Sandbagging supplies were established in Gravenhurst during the March break as an added proactive measure, and these are seeing good usage by the community. An additional location has been added at Sunshine Court in West Gravenhurst.

Town officials are keeping a keen eye out for changes in weather and water levels. “We continue to get regular inputs from a variety of sources like the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the Trent Severn Waterway, and the network with all of our neighbours, we just need mother nature to cooperate and let the water levels diminish,” said Clapp. The emergency management team is poised to act when and if necessary, and all of the Town’s Departments are standing by as needed.

The District of Muskoka is also monitoring water levels and road conditions.

Residents can continue to take the following preparatory actions if they are in flood prone areas:

    • Relocate items of value above flood levels. This includes items in basements, garages, sheds, yards, boathouses or other structures.
    • Check your sump pump to ensure its working properly.  Make sure the area around and above the pump is free from combustible materials.
    • Know where sandbag/sand stock piles are located nearest to your home.
    • Have an emergency generator available in case of power failure.
    • Pre-arrange emergency accommodations and prepare a “go bag” in case of evacuation. If you are forced to evacuate your home, remember to make allowances for pets, medications and other personal items.
    • Make sure docks and propane supply tanks are secured.
    • Listen to radio and media alerts regarding severe weather. Stay informed.

    Good Afternoon Muskoka Bay,

I know I am overdue for an update so here goes! First off, you are receiving this email because you are a paid member of Muskoka Bay Property Owners Association. The annual expiry for all memberships is on August 1, 2019. (However, I will be bothering you long before that for your renewal!) Our numbers are currently the largest since my involvement so thank you for that! We just keep getting stronger.

We may need all of your annual dues as Gravenhurst and the Province of Ontario have once again raised the prospects of selling the Muskoka Regional Centre. The Property is still owned by the Ontario Government but has changed hands in terms of who controls the file. It is now run by Bill Walker MPP who is in charge of the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services The Mayor and Senior Staff from the Town have met with the Province on three separate occasions during the past few months including bringing along Maple Leaf Schools. Here is a bit of the article that went out to the press on December 18, 2018.

“We had a very constructive conversation with the Ministers in which we stated our case and they revealed more insight into where the file currently rests,” said Glen Davies. “What we’ve learned is that another interested party exists and that negotiations are ongoing exclusively with the Province.  No further detail was provided.  However, we are very pleased to hear that the Province fully understands our desire to ensure that any potential development should become an economic/employment driver for the Town.

“I believe this to be a positive step forward none the less,” said Mayor Kelly. “We’ve reaffirmed our position, helped to keep the Maple Leaf School proposal on the radar and strengthened our relationship with the Province and will continue to do so in an effort to bring a mutually beneficial outcome. I’m confident that dialogue between the Province and our economic development team will continue to move forward,” said Mayor Kelly.”Paul.kelly2@gravenhurst.ca

Should we wish to launch a letter writing/email campaign with the other twenty-seven Lake Associations who have already offered their help, I will let you know.

An exciting development at the Wharf has been the possibility of restoring a third ship to our waterfront. “She’s the largest private steam yacht in Canada and one of the finest examples anywhere of the private steam yacht era. She’s also a marvellous piece of machinery,” John Miller of Muskoka Steamships went before Council with a plan to raise funds to restore the Wanda 3 and build a new state of the art boathouse to house her which would attach to the Discovery Centre. I believe an Eco Walking trail is also in the mix. Good luck John!

Keeping at the Wharf, Boston Pizza is once again up and running. As always, they continue to make huge charitable contributions towards our Community. They are providing the food free of charge for the next two big Community events both taking place on February 23rd. The Chamber of Commerce After Hours Meet and Greet and the Coldest night of the Year walk through town in support of GAP. (Gravenhurst Against Poverty). Go tohttps://cnoy.org/location/gravenhurst if you want to take a look. Full Disclosure, I was appointed to this Committee by Council and all I can say is that it has opened up my eyes to the “other” side of Gravenhurst.

Another interesting addition is the installation of the first “Mobipad” at the Gull Lake Swimming area with more to come. I can see the look on your faces. What is a Mobipad? It is a wheelchair/walker friendly pad that allows these apparatuses to enter right down into the water. I’ve never seen one in use but they seem to be quite popular and helpful.

On a more political note, Council did vote to “opt in” to having retail Cannabis Stores in Gravenhurst. There really wasn’t much of a choice for a Town our size. The April 1stdeadline of acquiring a retail location only applied to Cities with a population greater than 50,000 which we do not have. If the Town opted out, they would not qualify for the tax rebates from the Province yet would still have to deal with enforcement.

Onto some more Regional news from our Friends of Muskoka:

Major Changes in Village of Minett Plans

We are very pleased to let you know that Mitchell Goldhar, a long-time resident on Lake Rosseau and an active participant in our organization, has recently entered into a contract to purchase the Clevelands House Resort and associated properties from its previous purchaser and will soon close on the property. This change in events has given us some reason for optimism that Cleves will be developed in a less impactful way than is permitted under the Official Plan or as earlier depicted in other schemes we have seen from previous proposals. We will keep you posted as this project proceeds.

Another tidbit from our partners at the MLA:

Upgrades to Muskoka Beach Water Treatment Plant -District council has approved a budget amendment to allow needed upgrades to the 1983 Muskoka Beach Water Treatment Plant. The project was originally budgeted at $4 million in 2017, but additional recommended upgrades and higher U.S. tariffs have increased the project cost to $6.7 million dollars. The project includes rebuilding existing filter under-drains, reconstruction of the current building and installing new sedimentation tanks. Construction is slated to begin January 2019 with an estimated completion date of June 2020.

In closing I should let you know that the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival runs from Feb 14th to Feb 18th this year. It’s always a good time if you can make it up for the long weekend. As Skokie says “You Otter join us!”http://skokie.wixsite.com/gravenhurst

    Cheers Everyone,
